METHOD OF TEFL, Task 3

IS IT POSSIBLE THE TEACHERS TAUGHT WITHOUT USING MOTHER TONGUE…………??

I think, it’s impossible an English teacher taught without use mother tongue. As we know, English is complicated and foreign language for us especially for learners. If the teachers teach without using mother tongue I believe the students cannot catch the materials clearly.

Each time they were having the foreign teacher class, who speak English only in class, I found that the students had a great difficulty in understanding what the teacher meant. In one class, the foreign teacher taught the name of some vegetables, most students could not know what he referred to even he used the simple English to describe it. Usually on this occasion, the teacher turned to make explanation in mother tongue and only with this way the students understood. So, we can see that the mother tongue can be helpful to the foreign language learning.

The availability of the meaning of the foreign language could prevent the learner's wasteful guessing for meaning. By using the mother tongue, meaning is established immediately with the foreign language in the initial phases of foreign language instruction and this guarantees that the learning of EFL takes place on the premise of good understanding.

English learners, they do not go to the class with empty heads, on the contrary, they can instantly express themselves and understand materials through mother tongue. The concepts of mother tongue are firmly fixed in their minds. So, can we absolutely ignore the mother tongue and only use English to think, obviously, it is impossible. One who cannot master his/her mother tongue also cannot learn English well.

To sum up, one’s proficiency in his or her mother tongue determines his or her competence in learning a foreign language, and mother tongue can be greatly helpful to enhance both language learning and teaching English as a foreign language.

MAGAZINE VS NEWSPAPERS

A newspaper is fundamentally different from a magazine in content and style, because of the way in which it is produced and who it is produced for. Because people who subscribe to magazines usually are on a break, or plan on spending some time reading the magazine at their leisure, (therefore, having plenty of time to browse) an article can be longer than it ordinarily would be in a newspaper. Also, magazines as a general rule are more advertiser-driven than newspapers, so content in larger magazines is often very carefully checked against guidelines from those advertisers.
Newspapers are slightly different in this regard. Newspapers are driven more by readership than by advertisers. Newspaper editors tend to print articles that are controversial and would loath to have an advertiser, no matter how large, tell them what they can and can't run in their paper. However, people who read a newspaper do not have the time allotment for reading that magazine readers do, and newspapers are made to be very disposable, so articles are shorter, have more punch, and get to the point quicker.
Newspapers focus more on catchy headlines than on baseline concept, in an effort to capture the reader's interest and get him to read the entire story. Also, newspapers tend to have a myriad of writers all competing for the same reader's attention. They are usually specialists in certain areas like opinion and editorial, city editors, crisis reporters, or what's affectionately known as "fluff reporting" on items like home décor and parties, while magazines on the other hand tend to have small staffs of writers who wear all the hats: editing, writing, proofing, sometimes even doing some layout and photography. In magazine, there were many advertisements of some products to attract the readers. Many top magazines are run by one hundred or less staffers, while a newspaper, even a small weekly, will often have anywhere from several hundred on up to a thousand or more.

METHOD OF TEFL, Task II

Which one is better, English by native speaker or English by teacher……..?

Both of those ways are the best way to learning and understand English correctly. If we learn English by native speaker, it can improve and teach us how to spell words correctly because the utterance from native speaker more correct than by teacher. It cause sometimes each teacher has different pronunciation. If we learn English by teacher it can improve our understanding to speaking, reading and writing grammatically. It cause usually before practice teacher give us some basic theories of English.

According to me, as a beginner English by teacher is the better one. By teacher we can learn about English from the basic or simple thing. Usually the teacher give us some theories as a foundation before practice it. If we study by native speaker may we can learn about spelling correctly, but how we can understand about the grammatically of each sentence ? because usually native speaker speak quickly and as a beginner it’s hard to follow and understand what did the native speaker say.

So for me, as a beginner I will choose English by teacher because I can understand the basic theories like how to speaking, reading and writing grammatically. It cause the purpose of English just not how to spell words correctly but how to speak and write grammatically.

METHOD OF TEFL


My experience when I was learning English at the first time
I was learning English first time when I was at five grade of Elementary school. At the time English is very new and complicated subject for me. I could not understand what that my teacher teach and said. I just keep silent when my teacher ask me and do nothing. All of my friends did the same reaction like me. We could not understand the material soonly and well. It’s very complicated subject ! I always said that when I have English subject in my class. Finally, my teacher can understand my friends’ difficulty and me. She could understand why we were so difficult to catch the material. It cause the subject still new and we need a media to make us more understand.

The next day, in every English subject my teacher divided me and my friends to be a group. Every group consists of 2 person. The purpose is as a partner when we have discussion about material. Firstly, my teacher give us some books to read by ourselves. In the books there was some materials with pictures and words. And then my teacher explain the material and tell us what are the pictures and the meanings, and after it my teacher request us to read and discuss it with our partner and then we must practice it with our partner in front of classroom. With that’s way it could give us some motivation to learn English more.

So far, I and my friends could enjoy our new subject ( English ). It cause my teacher very patient to teach us and always remind us the material that we pass. My teacher teach us from simple things around us so it can help us to remember the material that ever we learn. My teacher tell us how to read  and how to spell well. And it could increase our ability in English. It is very fun for me because at the time English still seldom in elementary grade and I can get it at my school. Thanks my teacher, you give big spirit and inspiration so I have a dream like you to be an English teacher.
